The castle is located in the picturesque town of Reszel, 70 km north-east of Olsztyn, which formally belonged to the Warmian bishops, but the Teutonic Knights left it only in 1300. The construction of the castle lasted half a century from 1350 to 1401. For centuries the building was expanded and changed their destiny from a military structure to a magnificent hunting residence. Originally a stronghold was erected on the site of the castle, which survived until the mid-fourteenth century. Then a bishop's castle was built. Soon, the city that grew up next to him was connected by defensive walls with the fortifications of this episcopal stronghold. The whole took the form of one powerful defense system, but the towers of the castle were far above the city towers. The castle was built on the site of a former watchtower, it covered the entire southeast corner of the city. It was a four-sided building measuring 43x45 meters. First, the building was built on the east side. On the other sides, the courtyard was closed by a brick wall built on a stone base. The entrance to the castle was located in the western curtain. In the northwest corner, a large tower was erected on a square pedestal, which was raised several times. Finally reached eight stories, and the wall thickness on the top floors exceeded four meters. In the years 1594-1597, the nephew of King Stefan Batory transformed the fortified castle into a residence, which completely lost his military destiny. The building was destroyed during the Polish-Swedish wars. The Swedes, who were Protestants, were eager to plunder the possessions of the Catholic Church throughout Europe. The following centuries did not bring back the splendor of the episcopal stronghold. After the first partition of Poland, Prussian kings created a prison in the castle. In 1806 a town and castle fire broke out, which caused a fire. The main tower was the most damaged. In the 1820s, the southern wing was converted into an evangelical church. The defensive walls, the entrance gate and the tower in the northwest corner were also demolished. The castle has remained in this architectural form until today. In the interwar period, reconstruction works began at the castle, which are intermittently ongoing. Currently, the castle is one of the most visited and the greatest tourist attractions of Warmia. It is also a place of international events - exhibitions, meetings, plein-airs, conferences, etc.
