The castle is one of the later buildings built by the Teutonic Order. It began to be built on the site of an earlier small stronghold at the behest of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order Winrich von Kniprode around 1377 to be the seat of the convent and as a place from which attacks could be carried out east against Lithuania. Initially, the castle was to have two wings within a rectangle of walls measuring 44 x 52 meters: from the south-east and northeast, but soon after the construction of the first building from the south-east to the height of the ground floor and the basement for the second building, construction works were discontinued. They were taken again around 1393 on the initiative of the Grand Master Konrad von Wallenrode, who wanted to allocate the castle in Ryn as the seat of a new commandry for his brother Frederick. However, after the defeat at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the construction was limited to a quadrangle of walls with one Gothic building along the eastern side. It was short, because only in the years 1394-1422 the seat of commanders, later Teutonic heads. After the outbreak of the Thirteen Years' War in 1455, he was captured by local peasants and then recovered by Jerzy von Schlieben, who defeated them bloodily under the castle. After 1525, the castle was the seat of starosts of the Prussian prince. During the Swedish Deluge, in 1657, the castle was burnt down by the Tatars. Private property at the beginning of the 19th century. After the redemption, in 1853 it was rebuilt by the Prussian authorities into a prison. The castle burned down in 1881. After 1945 it was converted into a community center, small museum and city hall. After 1990, the city authorities sold it to a private person who adopted it for a four-star hotel.
