Address: ul. Turystyczna 1 , 11-500 Giżycko

It was built between 1844 and 1856 west of Giżycko, in the isthmus between the lakes Niegocin and Kisajno. In later years it was gradually enlarged. The name comes from the initiator and originator of the construction of the object - Herman von Boyen. The fortress is a six-pointed polygon, with an area of 100 ha. It was an important strategic object because it secured the eastern border against Tsarist Russia and protected the road to Königsberg. Boyen Fortress is surrounded by a high, over 2-meter brick-stone wall, on which rifle ranges were built. You can get inside through two main gates - Giżycka and Kętrzyńska and two auxiliary gates - Powder and Water (with a drawbridge and a water harbor). Inside the fortress you can see the powder laboratory, exercise buildings, stables, pigeon station, arsenal, barracks shelters. After the siege and capture of the fortress in the winter of 1945 (by the Belarusian army), a prisoner-of-war camp and field hospital were created on its territory. However, after 1957, after being taken over by the Polish Army, the Boyen Fortress was used for industrial purposes (cereal warehouses and poultry farms). Existing since 1933, the Boyen Stronghold Society of Friends strives to ensure that the facility is properly maintained and maintained in the best possible condition. In 1995 it was made available to tourists. Visitors have at their disposal: the following buildings: - Giżycko Gate: constituting the main entrance to the fortress from the east; was built in the years 1848 - 1849 (on the stone jumpers you can see the dates carved out informing about its formation), - barracks buildings and shelters: equipped with kitchens, food storage, power generator, arrest and curtains, protecting against fire; built in 1850, - observation stands: three rotary turrets, a periscope stand and an observer's dome; later, two platforms (upper and lower) were introduced, - ammunition workshop: the fortress has two such facilities; they consisted of a gunpowder magazine, missiles, a place where the bullets were armed and ammunition lifts, - armored dome: embedded in concrete (3m thick) and covered with steel armor; equipped with four observation holes, - Powder Tower: additional entrance to the city; initially closed with armored gates with a drawbridge, and later replaced by Rawelin - an earth fortification; since the 1980s. In the fortress you can also see the amphitheater, where various performances and festivals are played, - granaries: transported to the fortress by water; wooden granaries were bricked up.
