When choosing to Masuria it is worth stopping in Olsztyn - the most important city in the Olsztyn Lake District. The old town and the Castle of the Warmian Chapter are objects that deserve the attention of tourists. The history of Olsztyn begins in the fourteenth century, when a defensive stronghold was established in the bend of the Łyna River. With time, it was transformed into the Castle of the Warmian Chapter, whose walls were connected with city fortifications. In the 18th century, the castle lost its military significance, while part of the walls were demolished. The moat that once surrounded this stronghold was also filled in. The castle is currently the largest tourist attraction in the area of the Olsztyn Lake District. Many tourists want to see the stronghold with their own eyes, where Nicolaus Copernicus conducted his work and astronomical observations. It is also worth seeing the exhibition currently located in the palace interiors. This is the Museum of Warmia and Mazury, where you can see exhibits related to Copernicus and the history of the region. It is worth visiting the Olsztyn Old Town. Fragments of the former defensive walls with the fourteenth-century High Gate have been preserved here. Once it was the main entrance to the city, today it serves as a representative entrance to the old town. The market square in Olsztyn is surrounded by arcaded tenement houses, while the Old Town Hall stands at its central point. In the old town it is also worth visiting the cathedral of St. James, which was built in the fourteenth century.
