The castle was erected on the orders of the commander of Ostróda Günter von Hohenstein in the years 1349-1366 in the Gothic style, intended for the seat of the burgrave, whose task was to collect tax liabilities and to control the trade route from south to north. Unlike other Teutonic castles, it was not a monastery or the seat of a commander. The castle was located in the place where previously there was a Prussian defensive stronghold. Founded on a quadrangular plan, it had a tower and perimeter walls. The castle had three (or four) wings, which also results from the 17th century copperplate. Vaulted cellars were located under the castle buildings. The main wing was from the north of the city. In 2006, archaeological research confirmed the existence of the southern wing. After the construction was completed, the castle was visited by the grand master of the Teutonic Order Winrich von Kniprode. In 1410 he was captured by the townspeople and handed over to Władysław II Jagiełło. It was damaged during the war in 1414. Destroyed by the Tartars in 1656. At the end of the 18th century it fell into ruin and was partially demolished. In the years 1847-1849, the eastern wing was added to the castle buildings in the neo-Gothic style and transformed into a junior high school, whose director was, among others historian Max Toeppen, and they studied, among others Herman Pełka and Emil Behring, first Nobel Prize winner in medicine in 1901 for discovering the effects of antitoxins (memorial plaque in the gymnasium courtyard). After World War II, fragments of the castle preserved in the school building and cellars with cross vaults have survived. It is currently the building of the School Complex Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongowiusz.
